LAHORE: On Saturday, the emir of Jamaat-i-Islami Sirajul Haq launched a “consensus offensive” by holding meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PTI chief Imran Khan within a few hours. He reported a “positive response” from both sides to his initiative, which was meant to bring the two sides that are at odds closer to having talks about elections.
According to a JI press release, Mr. Haq first called PM Shehbaz, and then he met Mr. Khan at their homes in Model Town and Zaman Park, respectively.
Mr. Khan stated that the PTI is always prepared for dialogue within the ambit of the Constitution, but not with the corrupt and looters of national wealth, despite party sources’ belief that the Zaman Park meeting is a significant step toward potential consultations between the two parties.
Mr. Haq suggested forming a committee during their meeting to reach a larger consensus regarding holding elections in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and eventually the entire country.
Siraj claims he got positive reaction from the two sides; plans to meet Zardari after Eid, Mr. Khan and his chief of staff, Senator Shibli Faraz, also talked to the Jamaat chief about the country’s political and security situation and the alleged human rights violations by the PDM and Punjab caretaker governments.
The parties agreed to maintain regular consultations.
Mr. Haq plans to meet PPP leader Asif Zardari after Eid as part of his efforts to bring all parties to the table for negotiations. According to sources in JI, he anticipates making a breakthrough within the next two weeks.
Mr. Haq had previously stated during his meeting with PM Shehbaz that as prime minister, he was accountable for the 230 million Pakistanis. As a result, the Prime Minister “should come forward before the others with [an] open heart to seek a solution to the prevailing crises,” he added.
The leader of the JI made the observation that Pakistan was experiencing economic, constitutional, and political crises at the same time. He went on to say that only through dialogue between politicians could these issues be resolved.
He emphasized that the establishment and the judiciary should not be approached to resolve the political impasse. He stated that general elections should be agreed upon by all parties.
Mr. Haq’s efforts were acknowledged by PM Shehbaz and Imran Khan, who pledged their full cooperation and agreed that elections were the best course of action to resolve the nation’s current economic, political, and constitutional crises.
According to the Jamaat’s press release, Mr. Sharif stated that PML-N was prepared to collaborate with JI on issues of national importance if JI desired to do so. He said that everyone should let go of their stubbornness and be flexible in order to reach a consensus.
Mr. Haq was accompanied by JI deputy emir Liaquat Baloch and secretary general Ameerul Azim during the meetings.
